Arline and Barry Snyder opened their “Princeton Gallery of Fine Art in Princeton, NJ, in 1970. Situated close to Bucks County and the rich artistic heritage of the region, the shape of the gallery inventory soon took on a lean toward modernism. In 1985 the gallery held a memorial exhibition for Werner Drewes. Drewes was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists group, and the only member who studied at the Bauhaus school in Germany. Snyder Fine Art, under Gary Snyder’s directorship, opened the fall season in 1995 with “1937: American Abstract Art.” This show was largely assembled around the works of the founding members of the American Abstract Artists, (AAA).
In 1936, artists in New York frustrated by the exclusion from museum and gallery representation of American artists working in a modernist style, began meeting in the studio of sculptor Ibram Lassaw. Their conversations would culminate in the formation of the AAA and self-representation through annual exhibitions. The first of these exhibitions was held in the Squibb Building at 745 Fifth Avenue, April third through the seventeenth, 1937.
In 1995 a large portion of art collectors and dealers knowledgeable about modernist art were unaware of these American abstract artists whose careers blossomed in the years between the World Wars. New York art dealer, Martin Diamond had re-discovered many of these artists and revived their careers in the early 1980s. Gary was amongst the first dealers to give a scholarly presentation of their works and do so on Fifty-Seventh Street in New York City, the premier gallery address at that time.
To better understand the revisionist efforts of Gary Snyder, we can look at his catalog introduction from “1937: American Abstract Art.”
…”rather than continuing to categorize this era as underappreciated and relatively unknown, we can recognize the accomplishments of the American abstract artists of the 1930s, and the insights of those who have embraced the period and contributed to its understanding.

Hilla rebay (1890 - 1967, german/american)
Untitled.
Watercolor on paper, c. 1945. 203x241 mm; 8x9½ inches.
Provenance: Estate of Hilla Rebay; Gary Snyder Fine Art, NY.
In March of 1996, Snyder Fine Art opened its exhibition, "Museum of Non-Objective Painting: American Abstract Art." Gary Snyder acquired a large body of works from the Hilla Rebay Estate, many of the works on paper spent decades archivally stored in flat files with fresh colors and immaculate paper.
The Museum of Non-Objective painting was Solomon R. Guggenheim's precursor to his Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of Art we know today. Under the guidance of Hilla Rebay, Guggenheim was a pioneer in assembling a collection dedicated to art whose objective was purely spiritual and void of abstract forms derived from nature. Rebay would become the first director of Guggenheim's Art of Tomorrow: The Museum of Non-Objective Painting, when it opened its doors at Twenty-Four East Fifty-Fourth Street in 1939. Hilla Rebay not only promoted the current practitioners of this new form of art, rather she convinced her patron to allow her a stipend to fund young artists who chose pure abstraction as a means for their voice. Lots 97 - 109 in this catalog are works by American artists who participated in Hilla Rebay's art experiment.

Gary Snyder is a champion of artists who for any number of reasons never received the attention their work and chosen artistic paths deserved. Steve Wheeler, and the Indian Space Painter movement that followed him, has a story that belongs in the annals of American modernist history. Snyder Fine Art held four important exhibitions focused on Steve Wheeler and his peers: "Mythic Space," 1991; "Hello Steve: Works from the 1940s by Steve Wheeler," 1992; "Steve Wheeler, A New Modernist Language,"1994; "Steve Wheeler: Selected Works and the Artist's Library," also on view, "A Memorial Exhibition of Works on Paper by Robert Barrell," and "Works on Paper from the 1940s by Gertrude Barrer," 1996.
Lots 110 - 120 in this catalog are works on paper by Steve Wheeler's friend, Peter Busa, and Art Students League peers Gertrude Barrer and Helen DeMott. Perkins returned to Nashville in 1948 where he taught at the University of Tennessee’s Extension School until 1953. Two years later he received a two-year fellowship from the School of International Painting in Sergovia, Spain. Julien Levy opened his New York gallery with an exhibition of photographs with little enthusiasm from his audience. Though his passion for photography never diminished, he realized his strength lay in his connection to European Surrealist artists. Showing the works of Max Ernst, Salvador Dali, Man Ray, and Rene Magritte he soon found his niche. Surrealism's impact on young artists in America through Julien Levy's gallery is immeasurable. Artists such as Leon Kelly and Phillip Perkins show direct influence, while Abstract Expressionists like Conrad Marca-Relli, Herman Cherry, and Harold Shapinsky owe much to the development of their expressive style to automatic painting concepts of the Surrealist pioneers.

Thomas downing (1928 - 1995, american)
Untitled.
Acrylic on raw canvas. 279x228 mm; 11x9 inches.
Provenance: Gary Snyder Fine Art, NY.
When Gary Snyder moved to Chelsea with Gary Snyder ProjectSpace, his current scope of vision was fine tuned to post-war hard-edge abstraction and color field painters. Amongst the latter, Thomas Downing stands out for his unique approach to “stain painting,” (painting with water based permanent pigments on raw canvas). Downing developed a language through mostly dots where scale and color broke up an otherwise uniform surface with no other illusionary devices to create depth of field. “Thomas Downing: Washington Color School Painter,” opened October Fourth, 2007 at Gary Snyder ProjectSpace. Downing’s seven foot plus canvases in this raw white space were once again given freedom to do their push-pull magic.
