Letterform Archive has one of the world’s best collections of typographic history. With over 60,000 objects, there are hundreds of duplicates to be deaccessioned, and the nonprofit organization has reserved the rarest of these gems for its first-ever auction. Swann Galleries is honored present this offering of type specimens, periodicals, ephemera and books by giants of typographic design from the past two centuries.

Octavo, 16-page introduction, or manifesto of sorts, in script-styled font, portrait leaf, followed by a collection of type specimens, bound in contemporary speckled calf tooled in gilt with repeated floral decoration at corners and within 5 of the 6 spine compartments, raised bands, red morocco lettering piece to one compartment, marbled endpapers (library paper label at upper corner of front cover, covers worn, slightly sprung, a few stains, a hint of marginal foxing within, though largely clean, first signatures pushed forward, else a solid copy). Provenance: Lengthy inscription by RF Schierbeck (?), Amsterdam, 30 Sept, 1862 at front blank, Bookplate of a printing guild (Boekerij van de Federatie der Werkgevers Organisatien in het Boekdrukkers Bedrijf) which is adorned with dolphins and serpents, additional marginal ink stamp at title-page.

Bound in publisher’s half-calf and papered boards decoratively stamped in gilt to volume 1 and in peach to the cover of volume 2, both spines with raised bands, stamped in blind, decorative endpapers (vol 1 shaken with front joint starting from top, a split near rear hinge within the final chapter, also bears heavy rubbing, and moderate soiling, else good, with only mild marginal toning within; vol 2 is brighter in appearance, still significant rubbing, tears to surface, on whole a good copy).
